Our Rookie Year

Now that our rookie year as missionaries is over, things are becoming more predictable and dare I say, normal. It reminds me of starting my sophomore year of school…even though the future is unsure, I can look back at my freshman year and remember, “Oh yeah, I have done this before”… “I remember how I dealt with this situation last year”… “I remember the weather this time last year was like that too” etc. etc.
It’s encouraging to know that we now have our first year for reference, whereas before everything was new and different.

With that being said, here’s a list of 10 things we have learned from living in Africa for a year:

  1. Awkwardness – If you feel out of place, like the new kid sitting alone in the lunchroom…it’s okay, you are supposed to feel like that…and yes, everyone is looking at you.
  2. Learn the language – even if you can barely speak, try your best. People love to see you attempting to reach across the language barrier…and use hand gestures, they are worth a thousand words.
  3. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes – that’s how you learn.
  4. Pay attention to social cues – If you find yourself in a social situation where you don’t know what to do, just watch others and do as they do. Never go first.
  5. Power cuts happen – always keep the solar flashlights and battery packs charged and ready…and pretend the inconvenience of losing power doesn’t bother you.
  6. Water cuts happen too (sometimes at the same time as power cuts) – always store extra water in jugs and buckets so that you can clean, cook and bathe when the water is cut…and bucket baths aren’t so bad after all.
  7. When it’s too hot to function – rest with a wet towel around your neck, preferably in front of a fan.
  8. Toilet paper is a luxury – there will never be free toilet paper in public restrooms, so always carry some with you when you leave the house. Did I mention toilets are a luxury too?…yeah be prepared for squatty potties.
  9. Choose joy and be kind – whether you’re being treated unfairly for being an outsider, or you are frustrated for one reason or another… continue to choose joy and be kind. Remember you are an ambassador for the Lord, and like I said in point one, everyone is looking at you.
  10. Remember to rejoice – rejoice in the little things and be grateful!…even if it’s just finding Cheetos at the store for the first time in a year.
